What are BPO and KPO Services ?

Business Process Outsourcing Services (BPO) involves the contracting of the internal business functions to a third-party service provider in order to reduce overhead expenses. In its simplest form BPO is the relocation of “non-core” business support functions such as data entry, book keeping & accounting  etc. The main idea being to relocate transactional activities to the experts in order to give a company the capacity to focus on its expertise ie core responsibilities.

Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) is a subset of BPO, however, KPO involves more core functions which are usually more specialized and knowledge based as compared to BPO’s. These functions require advanced analytical and technical skills as well as high degree of specialist. Core functions may include Engineering & Design, Research & Development, Patent Specifications & Filings, Financial Services, Data Analytics amongst others.

What drives BPO & KPO ?

There are a number of costs and commercial reasons why a company may consider relocating some of their core business functions. These include the following reasons among others :

  • Increased globalisation, companies are seeking to access new capital, goods and markets to maintain a competitive edge due to the increasing difference in growth rates between emerging and mature economics.
  • Maximize value by reducing costs, better utilization of resources and improving efficiency to create a competitive advantage..
  • Availability of highly skilled and cheap talent pool.
  • Increased compliance burden due to the introduction of complex compliance systems to control behaviour.
  • Improved remote project management capabilities eg Skype, TeamViewer, Zoom.
